Jean-Claude Souyris graduated from N7 Toulouse (Engineering Degree in Electronics, 1989) and earned his PhD from University Paul Sabatier Toulouse in 1992. He served as a Visiting Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Center for Electromagnetic Theory and Applications in 1993–1994, and as a Research Fellow at the Centre d’Études Spatiales de la BIOsphère (CESBIO) until 1996.
Since 1997, he has been with the Centre National d’Études Spatiales (CNES), where he initially led R&D in radar technology. From 2008 to 2014, he headed the Altimetry and Radar Department, overseeing the development of spaceborne radar systems for ocean-focused missions such as JASON, AltiKa, SWOT, and CFOSAT. He later served as Head of the Valorization and Technology Group (2016), Deputy Director of the Innovation and Applications Directorate (2018–2021), and Deputy Director of Technology and Digital at CNES (2022–2025). On January 1, 2026, he was appointed Strategy Director of CNES.
Jean-Claude Souyris is the author or co-author of several books and articles on radar processing and physics. He has also chaired the technical committees of multiple conferences dedicated to space technology and its applications.
